Important points

  1. All foreign nationals entering India are required to possess a valid international travel document in the form of a national passport with a valid visa obtained from an Indian Mission or Post abroad.

  1. Indian visa is machine readable, and it is in sticker format. It has photograph of the applicant and does not require the signature of the Consular Officer.

  1. Validity of visa starts from its Date of Issue, and not from the date of arriving India.

  1. The duration and number of entries granted to the applicant will be solely at the discretion of the Embassy. No claims and correspondences shall be entertained in this regard.

  1. Acceptance of visa application does not automatically guarantee grant of a visa.

  1. Visa processing fee should be deposited, in cash, only after ascertaining the correct type and period of visa applicable for the purpose of visit and after arranging all required documents.

  2. Visa applications can be collected between 1600 - 1700 hrs on all working days, either personally OR by a third party on presenting the original receipt and an Authorization Letter (bearing identity details of the third party).

  1. All applicants should check the details in their visas, immediately after collection, and bring any discrepancies to the notice of the Consular staff without delay for clarification / rectification. If not, the Embassy will not bear any responsibility thereafter.

  1. Satellite telephone services like Thuraya and Irridium are not permitted in India. Unauthorized use of satellite telephone services is unlawful, and necessary legal action will be taken as per Indian laws.

  1. Documents in a language other than English shall be provided with their English version.


  1. Queries related to Visa, Passport and Consular matters may be e-mailed to cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in  Queries over phone (+40 372 147 431/2) may be attended between 2:30 pm to 4 pm only. 


How to apply for visa

  1. All individual visa seekers are required to apply for the Indian visa at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa. A photograph is required to be uploaded after filling in the online application form. Each application submitted online will have a unique Web File Number starting with ROUBV.

  1. A printout of the online submitted application has to be presented at the Embassy by the applicant in person alongwith all the required documents (see below). The photograph pasted in the application form should be the same as the photograph uploaded.


  1. No appointment is required to be scheduled to submit the applications in person. Applicants can visit the Embassy between 0930 - 1230 hrs on any working day to submit their applications.


  1. Visa processing fee is payable in RON by cash only. Visa processing fee once deposited shall not be refunded.Click here for Fees

  1. Applicants can track the status of their application by clicking on 'Visa Status Enquiry'.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

Business Visa (B)

Business Visa is granted to a foreign national who wants to visit India to establish an industrial / business venture, to explore possibilities to set up industrial / business venture, to purchase / sell industrial products or visit the Indian offices of their companies for business meetings, setting up facilities, training etc.

Nationals of countries other than Romania, Albania, Moldova may kindly note that Business visa can be considered in their case only if they have been resident in Romania/Moldova/Albania for the last two years. Proof of such residence such as Residence Permit, Work Permit etc. has to be presented in original.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • A signed letter from the employer in Romania/Albania/Moldova introducing the applicant with passport details, designation in the company, and stating the purpose of visit to India, duration of visit, number of visits envisaged etc. Also, the letter shall mandatorily give details of the nature of business in which the company is involved, number of employees in the company, and annual turnover of the company.

  • A signed letter of invitation from the Indian entity which the applicant will visit, on its letterhead, stating the purpose, duration and number of visits for which visa is required. Also, the Indian company shall email a scanned copy of such invitation letter to the Embassy at cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in.

  • Copy of the Certificate of Incorporation of the Indian company

  • Copy of the GST Registration Certificate of the Indian company

  • Copy of the PAN Card of the Indian company

  • Copy of the membership of the Indian company with Chambers of Commerce, Industry/Trade bodies etc.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and Accommodation arrangements in India.

Conference (C)

Conference Visa is granted to foreigners to attend an international Conference / Seminar / Workshop being organized in India by a Ministry or Department of the Government of India, State Governments or UT Administrations, Public Sector Undertakings, Central Educational Institutions, Public Funded Universities, or an organization owned and controlled by the Government of India or any State Government / UT, United Nations or its Specialized Agencies..

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • A copy of the signed Letter of Invitation for the Conference from organizers in India.

  • A copy of the letter from the Institution represented by the applicant in Romania/Albania/Moldova.

  • Clearance letters from the Indian Ministries; Organizers will provide such clearance letters to the visa applicants.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Employment Visa (E)

Employment visa is granted to a foreigner to take up an employment in India. Generally, employment visa is granted for the duration of the employment or to a maximum period of two years whichever is less. Annual gross salary should be more than INR 16,25,000 per annum. The employment will have to be subject to Income Tax as stipulated by the IT Act of India.

Employment Visa will be considered only if an Indian Company is authorized by the Government of India to employ foreign nationals and will be only to specialized positions.

Application for Employment visa will be accepted at this Embassy only from citizens of Romania/Albania/Moldova. Applications of other nationalities will be accepted if applicant has been resident in one of these countries for a period of at least two years. If not, they will have to apply for visa from the Indian Embassy in their country of origin.

In case of change in employer, foreign national will have to leave India and apply for a fresh employment visa from the Indian Mission in their country of origin.

Documents required:

  1. Passport valid for the duration of the employment with at least two blank pages.

  2. Visa Application Form duly filled in and signed.

  3. Proof of employment in the form of Employment Contract giving detailed terms and conditions of the employment, which should be signed by both the employer and the applicant. The Employment contract should clearly mention (i) the salary and allowances being paid in cash, and (ii) all other perquisites like rent free accommodation etc. which would be taken into account for the purpose of working out the income tax payable by the employee. Such perquisites should be quantified and indicated in the Employment contract. All amounts must be mentioned in Indian National Rupee (INR).

  4. Letter of Offer of employment to the applicant from the Indian company.

  5. Letter of Appointment of the applicant from the Indian company

  6. Letter addressed to the Consular Officer, Embassy of India, Bucharest by the Indian company :

  1. giving details of the nature of business in which the company is involved, number of employees in the company, and annual turnover of the company;

  2. introducing visa applicant with passport details, and giving justification for offering employment to the applicant

Also, the Indian company shall email a scanned copy of such letter to the Embassy at cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in.

  1. Copy of the Certificate of Incorporation of the Indian company

  2. Copy of the GST Registration Certificate of the Indian company

  3. Copy of the PAN Card of the Indian company

  4. Copy of Income Tax Returns filed by Indian company in India for the previous three financial years.

  5. Copy of the membership of the Indian company with Chambers of Commerce, Industry/trade bodies etc.

  6. Documentary proof of applicant’s educational qualifications and professional expertise. If documents are in a language other than English, kindly carry their English translations also

  7. If the applicant was employed in India previously, then No Objection Certificate from the Indian Income tax authorities in support of tax compliance on previous visits

  8. In case of intra-company transfer:

  9. Contractual business agreement between the Indian and  Romanian companies

  10. Letter from the Romanian employer

  11. Letter of acceptance from the Indian company

  12. Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Entry Visa (X)

An Entry Visa is given for specific purposes such as Indian origin applicants visiting relatives, or for any other purpose not covered specifically under any of the other visa categories.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • Invitation letter from the organization/agency based in India and a letter from the concerned institute in Romania/Albania/Moldova for persons going for voluntary work. For students, letter from their institutions and letter of financial guarantee either from parents or Bank.

  • Applications of children of Indian origin have to be signed by both parents if children are to travel alone or with only one parent.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

  • Documents establishing relationship in cases of relatives visiting or joining family in India.

Film Visa (F)

Film visa is granted to applicants who propose to shoot feature film, television, cinema and reality TV shows commercial TV serials etc.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form duly filled in and signed.

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India

  • 4 copies of detailed shooting script in case of feature film

  • Detailed concept in case of TV shows / TV serials

  • Details of visiting film crew and locations of film shooting

  • Details of places they will visit, separate letters giving names of crew with their passport details, list of equipment imported into India for the filming, detailed itinerary for the duration of filming etc..

  • Special permits will be required for filming in archaeological, heritage and restricted sites.

  • Any other document(s) as may be required on a case to case basis.

Intern Visa (I)

Intern Visa is granted to a foreigner intending to pursue internship in Indian companies, Educational Institutions and NGOs. Internships with NGOs will require the prior clearance of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Period of visa is maximum one year. The gap between commencement of internship and completion of graduation / post-graduation should not be more than one year. Interns sponsored under AIESEC will also be covered under this visa category. Interns selected in Companies should be offered a minimum salary of Rs 7,80,000 per annum.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for minimum 180 days and maximum covering duration of the visa with at least two blank pages

  • Visa Application form duly filled in and signed.

  • Letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational Institution / NGO / Company clearly stating the details, duration and terms and condition of the internship. Also, the Indian entity shall email a scanned copy of such letter to the Embassy at cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India

Journalist Visa (J)

Journalist Visa is granted to professional journalists, photographers, and television and film crew. Visa is granted for a period up to three months. Journalists and photographers are granted only Journalist visa irrespective of the purpose of their visit.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • Letter from the employer / TV or other Media House stating the purpose of travel.

  • Letter from Indian entity with whom the foreign media will collaborate or use assistance of for the filming.

  • Any other document(s) as may be required on a case to case basis.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Medical Visa (MED)

A Medical visa is given for a medical treatment. Duration and number of entries of the visa will depend on the nature of illness and its treatment certified by the Indian consulting doctor. Registration with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is required within 14 days of arrival in India if the stay is more than 180 days.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • Relevant letters signed and stamped from the hospital concerned in India.

  • Copy of the doctor’s registration with the state medical council

  • Copy of the Certificate of Accreditation of the hospital by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH).

  • Medical case history of the patient with recommendations of local doctor attending on the patient.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant and sufficient resources to cover medical expenses in India

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Medical Attendant visa (MED X)

A Medical Escort visa is given to those who are accompanying a patient. Maximum of two escorts are permitted with a patient. Visa is granted coterminous with the visa of the patient.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.

  • Letter from doctor/hospital certifying the requirement of an attendant.

  • Documents relating to the medical treatment of patient

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Missionaries (M)

Foreign missionaries coming to India for the first time in replacement (not augmentation) will be admitted only if they possess outstanding qualifications or specialized experience in their line. Applications from foreign missionaries coming to work in new foreign missionary centres will be considered only if the society concerned has obtained permission from the Government of India for opening the centre. Missionary Visa may be granted to a foreigner for a maximum period of one year with multiple entry facility.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

  • Visa application from members of recognized societies should be accompanied by a sponsorship letter from a responsible official of the society. The latter shall, inter alia, give an undertaking for the maintenance in, and repatriation from, India of the applicant, should the need arise. The applicant should also be required to cite in the application, the names of two responsible persons in India ( preferably in the State/ UT in which the applicant proposes to work) who will furnish a guarantee bond to the Government for his/her maintenance in, and repatriation from, India.

Mountaineering (MX)

The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) c/o the Ministry of Defence, New Delhi coordinates all arrangements for all mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas. All requests for such expeditions should, therefore, in the first instance, be addressed to the Ministry of Defence, New Delhi, at least four months in advance along with full details. A copy thereof shall also be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Foreigners desiring to climb mountain peaks in the Himalayas are advised to obtain permission for the expedition from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation before proceeding to India.

Project Visa (P)

Project visa is granted to foreign nationals going to India for execution of projects in the power and steel sectors. The period of visa would be initially for a period of one year or for the actual duration of the project/ contract, whichever is less, with multiple-entry facility.

Project visa will be accepted at this Embassy only from applicants who are citizens of Romania/Albania/Moldova. Applicants of all other nationalities should apply for their visa from the Indian Mission in their country of origin.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form duly filled in and signed.

  • Letters from the employers of the applicant and the Indian company offering the employment

  • Employment contract with detailed terms and conditions.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India

  • Copy of the Certificate of Incorporation of the Indian company

  • Copy of the PAN of Indian Company

    • Copy of educational qualification and experience, with English Translation

    • Letter from Indian company awarding the contract to a foreign company specifying the following details:

      • Name of foreign company

      • Registered address of a foreign company

      • Name of project awarded as per the tender document

      • Location of project in India (village/ town/ district/ state)

      • Duration of contract (number of days)

      • Total number of foreign workers likely to be sent by the foreign company- category wise (i) highly skilled (ii) skilled- technician with diploma/polytechnic degree; and (iii) skilled workers with school level education

  • Letter from the Indian company addressed to the Indian Mission explicitly stating that it guarantees the conduct for the foreign company and the foreign personnel involved in the execution of the project/ contract. This letter should also explicitly state that it would be responsible to ensure that the applicant (name of the applicant, passport no. and date of birth shall be mentioned) will abide by Indian rules and regulations. The letter should also state that the company will be liable to ensure departure of the applicant from India upon expiry of visa.

  • Letter from Foreign employer providing brief description of the nature of its projects in India and a brief description of the job which the applicant is required to perform in India.

Research Visa (R)

Research Visas are granted for Research work for a maximum of three years or for the duration of the research project, whichever is earlier.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid to cover the duration of the research with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • Submission of subject of research along with the application

  • Original admission letter of recognized university. (emails or photocopies of admission letters will not be accepted)

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Student Visa (S)

Student visas are granted to bona fide students to pursue regular studies at recognized institutions in India and to persons going for studying Yoga, Vedic Culture, Indian systems of dance/music etc. at recognised and designated cultural institutions. The visa is valid for the period of study as approved by the educational/recognized institutions in India.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid to cover duration of course with at least two blank pages

  • Visa Application form filled in and signed.

  • Letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational institution clearly stating the name of the course, its duration and fees charged including (board and lodging) including for courses like Yoga, Vedic culture, Indian dance & Music. Also, the Indian educational institution shall email a scanned copy of such letter to the Embassy at cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in.

  • Document showing financial support for the tuition fee and stay in India.

  • No objection letter from Parents of applicant to study abroad for applicants below 18 years

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

Tourist Visa (T)

Tourist Visa is issued to persons wishing to visit India as tourists, or for meeting friends and relatives, will be given six months or less tourist visas. Tourist visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. Double or multiple entry tourist visas should be applied for if the applicants wish to also travel to neighbouring countries and return through India.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form duly filled in and signed.

  • Document such as bank statement assuring financial standing of the applicant

  • Flight bookings

  • Accommodation arrangements in India.

  • In case the visit is on invitation of an Indian citizen, then an invitation letter along with copies of Proof of Identity, and Proof of Address of the Indian host. Also, the Indian host shall email a scanned copy of such letter to the Embassy at cons1.bucharest@mea.gov.in.

  • In case the visitor owns a house or apartment in India, then a copy of the registration papers of that property.

  • Applications of children of Indian origin, have to be signed by either parent if children are to travel alone or with a parent.

Transit Visa

A transit visa is granted to a foreigner for the sole purpose of enabling him/her to travel through India to a destination outside India. A transit visa will ordinarily be valid for a single journey and for entry within 15 days from the date of issue. In any case, the period of validity of a transit visa will not exceed that of the visa for the country of ultimate destination. A person who desires to make two entries into India in transit in the course of the same journey can be granted a transit visa valid for two entries and for stay in transit for a period not exceeding 3 days for each journey.

Transit visa is not required if a traveler will be transiting from within the airport. However, a transit visa will be required in case the transit involves clearing and recheck-in of baggage on another airline (as in the case of travel to Nepal, Sri Lanka etc.) as this will involve clearing Immigration before proceeding to the departure area for taking the onward flight. Travelers are advised to confirm the requirement with the airline at the time of booking their tickets.

  • Flight bookings and accommodation arrangements in India.

  • Valid travel documents for the country of destination and the countries en route

  • Copy of confirmed air ticket for onward journey.

  • In case of Seamen joining vessels in Indian ports, additional documents are required:

  • Invitation letter from the Agent in India

  • A letter from the Local Agent who is sending seamen to India.

  • Copy of seamen’s book.

Transfer of Visa

For transferring a long term visa from an old passport to a new passport, applicants are required to submit the old passport which holds the valid Indian Visa and the current valid passport.

Documents required:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

  • Visa Application Form filled in and signed.

  • Old passport in which current visa has been granted

  • Existing Indian visa should be valid for more than 30 days on the date of application.
